Some patients who are restless when waking may appear to be caused further discomfort by INTELLiVENT-ASV making multiple adjustments, such as increasing %MinVol, PEEP or oxygen. Some users may immediately want to switch to spontaneous mode to avoid this.

INTELLiVENT-ASV seemingly causing discomfort for waking patient

Causes and corrective action

Such discomfort in patients transitioning from passive to spont may be caused by the following:

  • A decrease in the patient’s SpO2 and an increase in PEEP. In this case, it may help to set a PEEP limit in the INTELLiVENT-ASV settings in spontaneous breathing patients.
  • Patient ventilator asynchrony. Ensure that inspiratory trigger, rise time and expiratory trigger sensitivity are set according to the patient.
  • An increase in respiratory rate resulting in an increase in %MinVol. Check and solve the reason for the increased respiratory rate:
    • If the patient needs ventilatory support, INTELLiVENT-ASV will react accordingly by increasing %MinVol.
    • Treat anxiety, “subjective” dyspnea, or agitation according to your hospital protocol.
